Credit Union takes to the road

At this time of year there are plenty of run/walks organised to get people fit and also to raise money for good causes.

The latest is Credit Union’s inaugural 5K Walk/Run, held in conjunction with the Department of Sports, supported by Hy-Tech Tigers Track and Field Club. There will be prizes, free T-shirts and refreshment.

The race starts and ends at the Credit Union building on Huldah Avenue in George Town, opposite Smith Road Oval cricket pitch. It is on Saturday 6 October, starting at 7am. Registration is $20 for adults and $10 children.

Corinne Glasgow of Co-op Credit Union said: “ We are hoping for 100 or more participants walker and runners and welcome all adults and children. It doesn’t matter how fast or how slow you can walk or run, this year has been declared ‘International Year of Cooperatives’ by the United Nations in recognition of the tremendous work of cooperatives around the work in making people’s lives better financially, socially, educationally and more.

“The successes of financial cooperatives (credit unions) was never more evident than with the global financial crisis when many financial institutions went under. This was not the case with credit unions that continued to help their members simply through their democratic principles of governance, member-ownership, sound financial principles and social responsibility in the community in which it operates.

“As part of our International Year of Cooperatives celebrations we want to organise something from which the whole community could benefit as well as give back something specifically to the youth and children in the community.

Organising the first 5k Walk Run at the Credit Union has been a busy time with the official opening of the new building last Thursday. “With the official opening of the new Credit Union building a success and behind us, we are hoping to focus this week on further promoting this event,” Glasgow said. “We are hoping to make this an annual event to help our community become more conscious of our health and wellness and to provide more opportunities to do that.”

Some of the proceeds raised will be injected back into the community and youth programmes including Hy-Tech Tigers Track and Field Club who are assisting the Credit Union and Department of Sports with the officiating.

Merta Day, sports coordinator for women in the Department of Sports said: “The Department of Sports is always very enthused to back initiatives that involves the further promotion of our community participation in physical exercise activity, no matter their level.

“We encourage everyone to come out and take part by walking, jogging or running. Proceeds raised will go to a worthy cause. Please make it a date and help our local Credit Union celebrate International Year of Cooperatives and what better way than through exercise and comradeship.”
