Missionaries of the Poor Associates, Cayman, is scheduled to hold their third fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday, 13 April.
The event, which will also include a live auction, is slated to be held in the courtyard at St. Ignatius, kicking off with drinks and a silent auction at 7pm.
The theme for this year’s dinner is “Blue Caribbean Sea”. The event, held every other year, was last held in 2011 and raised some $25,000, which went to support a home for pregnant mothers in Jamaica. This year, the money will go to Nairobi, Kenya, in support of several projects, including homes for children and the physically and mentally disabled.
Event organiser Fiona Pimentel said that based on the success of previous events, they are hoping for 200 people to attend.
“We’re putting together an evening which will be great fun for everyone, and it is good to know that the funds will go toward such a worthwhile cause,” she said. “As a group, MOP Associates do support people locally who need financial help or other support. However, the money raised from our fundraising dinner goes directly to MOP central office. They decide where the greatest need is. In other words, the priority is based on need, rather than on geography.
“There are many good charities here and elsewhere that serve all sorts of different needs,” she added. “And that is great, there is room for all of us. People will support the charity that inspires them on a personal level, and we hope that in many cases that will be MOP.”
MOP is a monastic order of “Brothers” and “Sisters” who dedicate their lives to looking after the poorest of the poor in Jamaica, Haiti, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Kenya, Uganda, and the United States. They care for abandoned men, women and children, giving them food, shelter, and education.

Sleep out for a cause
Year 7 Sunday School students from St. Ignatius Catholic Church will be learning what it is like to sleep rough on Saturday, 23 March, when they sleep outside in tents. The initiative aims to raise money for Missionaries of the Poor Associates, Cayman. The money will be used to help those who are less fortunate in Cayman.
The children thought of the idea last September, after reading the story of a boy who has raised more than US$130,000 by sleeping out every night.
“The youngsters will be doing without any modern conveniences, such as electronic equipment, that children these days are so attached to,” Fiona Pimmentel, Year 7 Sunday School teacher, said. “Many months have passed, and I expected that their enthusiasm would fade, but they are as keen as ever to do it, so I hope that their friends and family will be inspired to support them.”
