Cayman’s next automotive showcase figures to tie in to a popular movie launch.
Organisers of Cayman’s Grand Autoshowoff want to put on a car show in May, in time for the release of “Fast and Furious 6”. Michael Webster said the plan is to feature machines that will appear in the movie.
“Boknology Inc. and MJ Entertainment are planning on more events later on and we’re setting a few dates,” Webster said. “The next one we would like to have would be in May for the new Fast and Furious movie. We’re talking to Hollywood Theaters and Camana Bay on having it there. If anything, we can have one there later on.
“The May event would be more high-end cars with Ferraris and Porsches,” he said. “The hope would be to tie in the cars with the movie. From there, we’d do another one by Seven Mile Shops in the summer, say July or August.
“Tony’s Toys are celebrating their 10-year anniversary this year and we might have a car show to celebrate it. We also might do one at Grand Harbour.”
Webster organised last Sunday’s show with Shelby Carlos, part owner of Carlos and Martin’s Tex-Mex Cantina, and Shane Ebanks, through his company Premium Touch Auto and Marine Detailing.
Dozens of mean machines and hundreds of enthusiasts poured into Seven Mile Shops on West Bay Road for the automotive showcase. A stellar array of automobiles was on display, from a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and a Mitsubishi Evolution X to a Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Onlookers saw all types of cars – from classic muscle and tuner-friendly imports to powerful exotics.
The car show also saw several motorbikes, from Honda CBR 1100XXs to Yamaha R1s, along with a few boats. Stalwarts of the local motor sports scene were also present, including Gary Huggins and Dante “Ross” Hydes. All were eligible for prizes in classes such as: “Super Street Legal”, “Best Island Domestic”, “Best Island Import”, “Best Motorbike” and “Crowd Favourite”.
For entertainment, Christian La Pena and Jay De La Vega served as live disc jockeys.
