Equitourism another string to Cayman Islands bow

What do you get when you combine tourism, nature and horses?

That would be equitourism, said Cayman Islands Tourism Association executive director Jane van der Bol.

“Equitourism has grown in many countries, including the Cayman Islands,” she said. “With Cayman’s many opportunities to ride horses on the beach, equitourism is enjoyed as noncompetitive riding combined with exploration of local areas that encourage ‘slow’ enjoyment and appreciation of our beaches, history and origins.”

She added that competitive sport in the equestrian arena brings many people to an event not just as participants but also judges, enthusiasts and fans. In 2012, Cayman won the Zone 10 World Dressage Challenge.

Sports tourism is a growth market for the destination, she noted, with visitors and athletes travelling to Cayman for everything from triathlon to swimming, running, biking and more.

Sports tourism is worth around $600 billion a year on a worldwide level, she added.
