Brown belts want to be black now

One hundred talented young karate enthusiasts successfully graduated for various colour belts during a ceremony held last week.

Sensei Greg Reid of the CASK club said he was pleased with the high standard of the juniors at the two graduations at the King’s Sports Centre.

“The first was for white and yellow belts, the second was for orange to brown belts,” he said. “There were nearly 50 successful belt graduates in each of the ceremonies.”

“Also in attendance were the around 15 top level brown belts who were going through the motions in preparation for a possible black belt examination later this year,” he added.

Family members also came to view the ceremonies, which took place on 9 March.

Sensei Reid added that the youth, women and coed adult programmes are constantly building as the club continues to promote Japanese WADO Karate in the Cayman Islands.

“In the New Year, we have seen over 25 new students join our youth programme alone,” he said. “Some of the many benefits for youths in karate include discipline, respect, leadership, focus, physical fitness, teamwork, goal setting, bully proofing and Japanese language skills.”

Reid said the karate society is a member of various organisations including WUKO, CIKF, WADO Canada, and ISKF and has been invited to attend clinics and attend major tournaments internationally.

“Throughout 2013, as we prepare our athletes through high performance seminars and clinics, we are working towards developing a national team training programme for Cayman,” he said. “There is a strong possibility that some of our athletes may be travelling abroad within the next 12 months.

“We are also planning lectures, demonstrations at various schools and community events throughout the island over the next year to educate the youth and general public about the amazing benefits of traditional Karate-do,” he added.
