The Gaelic football season began in style over the weekend with the Corporate CML Mixed 9s Day at the Camana Bay playing field which attracted plenty of supporters as well as players.
The all-day action was to promote the 2014 LIME LTE Gaelic League and attract new players for the season that starts in a couple of weeks and runs until June.
Organizer David O’Connell said, “We play every second Sunday and have many social events including Paddy’s Day Bash, quiz nights, annual tours and the finals day finale bash.”
The Gaelic Football Association will also select a team to represent the Cayman Islands in the upcoming Gaelic North American Championships in Boston.
The Zolfo Cooper team retained the Pete O’Neill memorial trophy after beating UBS in the final. “Well done to captain Kevin Guirey and all at Zolfo Cooper on their win,” said O’Connell. “This is their second year in a row winning the cup and they showed great Gaelic Athletic Association skills in all matches on Saturday. Thanks all for competing this year.”
Some superb performances from Alan Kelly, Guirey and Katherine Maw saw them win all three group matches and set up a semifinal versus PwC. The other semi saw UBS overcome Dave O’Driscoll’s 99% team.
Other teams competing on the day included EY, DART, Maples & Calder, BDO, Harmonic and FFP. “A great day was had by all and everyone seemed to enjoy the start of the Gaelic season,” O’Connell said.
The LIME LTE Gaelic League 2014 starts on Feb. 9 and is normally played every second Sunday until June. For those interested in playing in the Gaelic football league, email [email protected] or visit www.caymangaelic.com.
