Broadhurst will keep flagging youngsters for greatness

Flag football is back on the scene for tackling tykes.

The Security Center Ltd. 2014 Youth Flag Football League is slated to start Feb. 1. Catering to boys and girls ages 7 through 17, the competition is being put on by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association, with Kyle Broadhurst resuming his duties as league coordinator.

The association was looking for players, volunteers and coaches. The statement reads, “We are very excited about this upcoming season and hope you will join us to celebrate one of the fastest growing sports on the island. This is our sixth season and we are aiming for it to be our best season yet.

“We have 60 spaces for each age division (7-9, 10-13, 14-17), so please register immediately as it is first-come, first-served.”

Last year saw games at the Camana Bay Sports Field. The Popeyes Saints, led by Adrian “Cook Rice” Rowe, Dominic Martucci and Brett Eden, won the senior division by defeating RaShaun Wright and the 3T Cayman Giants in the finals.

Kalie Broderick and Giovanni Foster helped the Dart Cayman Islands Dolphins defeat the Walkers Wolverines for the middle division crown. The Maples Raiders would top the junior ranks, ahead of the Burger King Gators, under the leadership of head coach Carlo Ylagan.

The competition has consistently showcased top youth talent like volleyball prodigy Ileann Powery, footballer David Lee and hockey stalwart Dylan Bostock. Many companies have served as sponsors over multiple seasons like Conyers, Strategic Risk Solutions and Al La Kebab.

News of the league comes as the association braces for the start of its annual coed tournament, which is slated to begin Feb. 14.
