Cayman crushed by relegation again

The Cayman Islands national team has been relegated from the International Cricket Council World League Division Five after losing their final match in Malaysia.

Having won only one of their previous four matches – against Guernsey in their opening game of the 50-over tournament – Cayman then lost to Malaysia, Nigeria and Jersey.

They needed to beat Tanzania by a big margin on Wednesday to stay in Division Five but lost by 12 runs and were relegated along with bottom side Guernsey.

Jersey and Malaysia were the top teams and got promoted to Division Four. Nigeria and Tanzania stay in Division Five.

Tanzania scored 138 runs all out in 44.1 overs at the Royal Selangor Club in Kuala Lumpa, a modest score. But Cayman Islands could only manage 126 runs all out in 39.1 overs and lost by 12 runs.

The Cayman side was led by Ronald Ebanks. His brother Kervin took five wickets in the match against Guernsey and was named Man of the Match.

Spirits were high and thoughts of getting promoted was prevalent, but they struggled in successive games.

Troy Taylor was probably Cayman’s fittest and most consistent player but he had to sit out the Tanzania game through injury.

The team returns on Saturday and assessment of how the tournament panned out will be made from next week.

Theo Cuffy is the Cayman Islands Cricket Association technical director. He said, “I am very unhappy that we were demoted, however, we have to wait for the team to come back and assess what they encountered before we can decide our course of action.

“It has been a disappointing campaign. The squad worked really hard since September and the coaches were satisfied that they were well prepared.

“Unfortunately, it did not work and we now have to assess what we are doing wrong and go on from here.”
