A longtime Cayman Islands public servant was in critical condition Wednesday after police said she was attacked by a machete-wielding man.
The woman’s 42-year-old husband was arrested shortly the attack, which happened around 5 p.m. Tuesday at a home on Monument Road in the center of Bodden Town, directly across from Coe Wood Public Beach.
Officials with the National Roads Authority confirmed that the victim, Lois Hall-Vaughan, 53, has worked at the authority as the board’s executive secretary since 2007. She is also the authority’s information manager.
“She’s just a very calm, conscientious hard worker, you would never associate violence with her,” said NRA Director Paul Parchment. “This was shocking to all of us.”
According to police, Ms. Hall-Vaughan was struck with a machete a number of times in a “violent domestic assault.”
“It is likely that she will be stable enough to be airlifted off island for vital medical treatment [Wednesday],” a statement from Royal Cayman Islands Police Chief Inspector Brad Ebanks said.
Officials with the NRA confirmed that Ms. Hall-Vaughan had been airlifted to a Miami hospital Wednesday. She was accompanied by her son, officials said.
Although police did not state why, the arrested man was hospitalized in stable condition under police guard while officers continued their investigation. It is understood the suspect ingested a poisonous substance after the attack.
