26 flown to Cuba, 20 still remain

Twenty-six Cuban migrants, who had been housed at the Immigration Detention Centre, were repatriated to Cuba on Tuesday.

Officials from Cayman’s immigration and prison departments supervised the repatriation of the 25 male migrants and one female.

They flew to Cuba on a chartered flight from Owen Roberts International Airport on Grand Cayman.

The detention facility currently holds 20 other Cuban migrants, includes 13 males and seven females, who arrived in local water on Tuesday, Sept. 2 September.

Hundreds of migrants have passed through Cayman waters over the past 18 months. Some have stopped off for a short while before continuing their journey by sea, while others opted to stay in Cayman to await repatriation to Cuba or to try to seek asylum.
