The climax of the Summer Mixed Touch Rugby League 2014 season takes place this Saturday as both the Competitive Division and the Social Division titles will be decided.
It promises to be a real treat as 32 teams with around 400 players total competing. It is a record number for this competition, celebrating a wonderful sport.
Teams in both divisions will be playing for a number of possible trophies depending on their finishing positions in the league.
There is the Cup for the top four teams in each division, with the Plate, the Bowl and the Shield available to the other teams in each division.
So there will be something for everyone to play for on the day. So far this season, more than 800 tries have been scored, showing the attacking threat and skills with balls in hand are improving.
In the Competitive Division, Stepping Stones have topped the table from Day 1, even though they have played several games with less than a full team.
They will renew their rivalry with Delta, Genesis Trust and Maples to claim the top prize.
All these teams boast a gaggle of top Cayman national touch players so it will take a Herculean effort to win through to the top prize.
They will all need to get a strong squad out because these games will be about as fast as it gets. Taking a breather is rarely an option in these games.
The other teams in the division include (in order of final standings): Island Air, Harmonic, Alphasoft, KPMG1, Broadhurst, OFSCL, Village Greenies, DART, PwC, Deloitte, Walkers Blue Iguanas and Team Guru.
In the Social Division, it’s between Zolfo Cooper, DMS, GCM and Rawlinson & Hunter with only three points separating them.
All four have had some great performances and it is too close to call the winner. The emphasis in this division is for those teams who are less experienced or less competitive but all will have a point to prove.
Other teams in the Division are: Baraud, Appleby, LIME, UBS, Trident, BDO, Conyers Dill & Perlman, Maples Mavens, KPMG2, Queensgate, Walkers Blue Hatchlings and Grant Thornton.
The race for leading try scorers is heating up nicely too. Of the men, David Acutt of Maples (33) is just one ahead of Morgan Shelver from Stepping Stones with Riley Mullen in third (27).
Notably though there are two DMS players – Curtis Wilson and John Bruton – in the top 10, showing what a deadly duo they can be in the Social Division.
Chandra Friesen (19) of Stepping Stones tops the women’s charts – most of these supplied by Morgan Shelver who must rate as the division’s most valuable player.
The girls from Alphasoft – Biannca Johnson, Katy Bayles and Caroline Deegan – all feature in the top 10, which goes to show what a brilliant season they have had, given that they have been the only three girls in the team for most of it.
So, at the South Sound Rugby Ground on Saturday, there will be plenty of intrigue to see who is crowned as champions.
