Driver pleads guilty to causing road death

The two men were racing, attorney tells court

Igor Domladis pleaded guilty in Grand Court on Friday to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving in the incident that killed Zak Quappe, 21.

Domladis was 23 at the time of the incident, which occurred on May 18, 2013, in the vicinity of Sand Cay on South Church Street.

Defense attorney Ben Tonner said the two young men “were engaged in competitive driving.” He told Justice Michael Mettyear that the Crown’s expert had said the car driven by Domladis slid into the deceased’s car, and the defense expert had said the opposite. “But either way, they were racing,” Mr. Tonner said.

He advised the court that he had sent the Crown a basis on which his client had entered his plea. He asked the court to order a social inquiry report, pointing out that Domladis had no previous convictions.

Justice Michael Mettyear set sentencing for Nov. 27 and continued the defendant’s bail until then.
