Flames burn Solar Bears to continue flawless start

Local roller hockey remains dominated by the Cayman Hot Sauce Flames.

The reigning two-time champions in the Cayman Islands are now 3-0 in the Fall 2014 Adult Inline League at Kings Sports Centre. The Flames will put their unbeaten mark on the line on Sept. 30 against the 0-3 High Rollers at 9 p.m. Tuesday’s other contest pits the 1-2 ITS Solar Bears against the 2-1 Sharknados at 8 p.m.

Cayman Hot Sauce are coming off a 7-3 win over the Bears last week. Matt Lawson, Jamie Nelson, Mike and Andrew Bowden and Dennis Paschier found the back of the net for the Flames while Dan Etherington and Colin Wilson scored the losing side.

The Flames continue to be statistically dominant. The squad boasts the league’s top offense, scoring a competition-best 32 goals, while allowing a league-low 14 goals. Paschier is the catalyst on offense with a team-high seven goals (third-best in the league) and seven assists (second-most in the competition).

In spite of their abysmal record, the High Rollers have plenty of individual talent. Joe Jewitt has a competition-best eight assists while Gordon Mattison is tied for third in scoring with seven goals.

The other contest pits a Sharknados squad coming off a 13-7 triumph over the High Rollers. Evan Ellbogen, Claude Plamondon, Dan O’Flaherty and Jason Windsor scored for the winners while Rich Hastings, Mattison, Rob Seward, Tim Courtis and Jewitt netted goals for the High Rollers. Ellbogen now has a league-best 18 goals.

A pair of other competitions are going on at Kings aside from the adult roller hockey league. The 2014 Fall Ball Hockey League is heading into week four, with matches on Oct. 2. At 8 p.m. the 1-1-1 Barracudas play the 1-2 Pirates with the 1-1-1 Devil Rays battling the 2-1 Sharks at 9 p.m. The Rays sport the best offense (with a competition-best 12 goals) thanks to league scoring leader Brian Lehnerer (five goals) and Dylan Wiltermuth sporting a league-high three assists.

The youth roller hockey league, which plays its matches every Friday and Saturday, sees the Ecay Traders leading the 13 and Under category, the KPMG Canucks and Deloitte Devils topping the 10 and Under segment and the Blackhawks sitting atop the 8 and Under group.
