Submit work permit renewals early, employers told

Chief Immigration Officer Franz Manderson is urging employers to submit work permit renewal applications for their staff before current work permits expire.

Mr Manderson reminds all concerned that employees whose paper work is submitted after the expiry of their present work permits must stop working while the permit applications are processed.

Explaining the need for this reminder, he says that a growing number of applications are being submitted after the expiry of work permits, thus failing to meet the requirements of Section 56 (3) of the Immigration Law (2007 Revision).

This section of the law allows employees to continue working provided that within the timeframe of an existing work permit, an application has been made to the Board for the grant or renewal of a permit with the same employer.

‘Employers are accordingly advised to pay careful attention to the expiry dates of all work permits, including those that are temporary, to ensure that grant or renewal applications are submitted prior to expiry dates,’ Mr Manderson says.

‘It should also be noted that late applications will be dealt with in the order they are received; only in very exceptional circumstances will applications be expedited to the Boards,’ he concludes.
