Toddlers call out MLAs

The Government Minister responsible for children’s welfare will be called from the Legislative Assembly meeting to the front of the building by a gaggle of pre-schoolers Tuesday.

This planned interruption of proceedings is regarded by Minister Alden McLaughlin as a welcomed respite from his parliamentary duties, and he plans to interact with them as part of Cayman’s Week of the Young Child celebrations.

Representing pre-schools throughout the Cayman Islands, the toddlers will hear stories and share their responses with the Education Minister. They will also participate in a balloon release to celebrate the launch of this annual event, states a press release.

The focus of this year’s WYC is the close correlation between children and the communities in which they live. The range of events includes a national book-collection drive; a reception hosted by Governor the Stuart Jack; Open Days at all pre-schools on Friday; a free movie night at the South Sound Dart Park, also Friday; and a free family breakfast at Mary Miller Memorial Hall the following morning, 19 April.

This 10th annual event is again spearheaded by Senior Early Childhood Development Officer Marjorie Beckles supported by Early Childhood Development Officer Deanna Peterson and other ECS staff; working with the Department of Children and Family Services, the Department of Education Services and other organisations and businesses.
