Woman stung at sandbar

A female cruise ship passenger was stung by a stingray at the Sandbar Thursday morning.

Acting Chief Enforcement Officer with the Department of Environment Mark Orr confirmed that it happened around 10.30am. Marine Enforcer Stuart Turpin responded to the call and took the woman by vessel to the Cayman Islands Yacht Club where she was met by an ambulance.

The woman was a cruise passenger and had been on the Resort Sports vessel African Grey visiting the sandbar.

It is understood the woman was conscious at all times but in pain following the incident.

Padraic Linane, representing Resort Sports, said he believed the woman was re-boarding her cruise ship.

Although Mr. Linane had not yet received details on the incident, he said he believed the sea had been quite choppy at the sandbar.

Shortly after the incident the sandbar was closed due to weather conditions by the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Media Liaison Officer Deborah Denis said the closure had nothing to do with the injuries the woman had received.
