Birthday wish benefits school

Marika Scotland had an unusual wish-list for her 9th birthday.

Instead of gifts, the Savannah Primary School student asked her family and friends to give her money, which she would donate to the school’s Parent-Teachers Association.

Marika collected a total of $1,075.

‘I told my parents that instead of receiving a lot of gifts for my birthday I wanted to do something to help other people,’ said Marika.

‘I asked them how I could do that and they suggested that I ask for money instead of gifts and donate it to the PTA, as this would be a way to help all the students at my school,’ she said.

Principal of the school, Lorna Blackman, praised Marika for her generosity.

The donation has been added to the PTA’s fundraising pool, which is used for school trips, library books, white boards, classroom supplies and other school improvements.

The school’s PTA president Mark Scotland, was proud of his daughter: ‘I congratulate Marika for her kindness and thoughtfulness towards others, and I hope that other children in Savannah Primary and other schools might follow her example and think of others that may be less fortunate than themselves.’
