The Cayman Islands National Weather Service issued a severe weather statement at 4pm Tuesday.
‘Weather charts indicate a broad area of low pressure over the southwest Caribbean is moving slowly towards the northwest,’ the advisory stated, adding that an extensive area of cloudiness and showers was spreading across the region.
‘The Cayman area can expect overcast rainy weather with light to moderate southeast winds during the next 24 hours. Weather models are forecasting some two to three inches of rainfall between tonight and tomorrow night. Flooding of low lying areas is expected and residents of such areas should exercise caution.’
The area of low pressure is associated with weather system that has been designated ‘Invest 93L’.
Some of the global computer models forecast the system to become Tropical Storm Paloma or even a hurricane in the northwest Caribbean Sea late this week. Other models forecast the system to dissipate or turn toward Central America.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the National Hurricane Center in Miami gave the system a 20 to 50 per cent chance of developing into at least a tropical depression.
