Former Sister Islands MLA Lyndon Martin has indicated he will fight charges brought against him by officers from the UK Metropolitan Police, pleading not guilty to both counts in the Grand Court Friday.
Mr. Martin |
Martin is charged with the Common Law offence of doing an act tending and intending to pervert the course of public justice and the statutory offence of falsely accusing a person of a crime.
The particulars of both charges were read to Martin before he entered the not guilty pleas Friday.
The first charge alleges that between 10 August and 21 September 2007, Martin attempted to pervert the course of public justice by falsely alleging that then Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Ennis unlawfully misconduct himself in a public office, by supplying Cayman Net News publisher Desmond Seales with confidential and/or sensitive police material.
The charge goes on to claim that Martin also falsely alleged that Mr. Ennis has informed the Net-News publisher that other senior officers in the RCIPS had behaved discreditably in their professional and personal lives.
The charge of falsely accusing a person of a crime arises from the same set of facts.
Martin will get to respond to the charges at his Grand Court trial, which has been set down for 23 March.
Justice Lennox Campbell extended Martin’s bail until that date.
Martin was represented by Defence Attorney Ben Tonner during Friday’s mention hearing.
