The Transformers prison football
team is certainly a testament to community spirit. Some are inmates, others
staff at Northward and others public figures who want to do their bit for
society. The chemistry works, evidently, judging by how well the Transformers
play in the Logic Five-A-Side League.
They are well established in
Division One of the three leagues at King’s Sports Centre and two weeks ago
confirmed themselves as one of the best sides with a 5-2 Division 2
championship victory over the CFP Buzz Crusaders.
Transformers went two up early on.
Buzz fought back to reach half-time on level terms but it was the Transformers
who took their chances better in the second half to run out clear winners.
Scorers for Transformers were two
apiece for Rono Henry and Roger Johnson and one by Stephen McAlpine. Dan Kelly
and Kris Pearson scored for the Crusaders. Buzz’s Dan Stuber did an admirable
job of snuffing out Transformers striker Dominique Pearson who scored 16 in the
regular season.
Transformers manager Sharon Lexa
Lamb said: “Having got so close last season, to take the trophy this time round
was just what the Transformers needed. To see the look on the faces of my team
when that bell rang was priceless. It was our time!
“Congrats also though to the CFP
Buzz Crusaders. To get to second place is no easy thing. They too played a
great game. I think we wanted it more. Being a squad built up mainly of prison
inmates, we have a lot more to prove and a harder time proving it. Dominic
Pearson, Stephan McAlpine and Ronnie Dilbert all deserve special mentions. Next
season will be bigger and better. They have a woman as a manager, what else can
I say – I shout a lot!”
Ray Singh, athletic director at
King’s, said: “The Crusaders put up a great fight. They’ve improved a lot as a
team, since winning the Division 3 finals last season. To come into this season
and battle it out for the Division 2 title is an incredible feat. Unfortunately
for them though, they went up against a very talented Transformers team, who
were hungry for their first title.”
