Home Gas fired up for playoffs

In the world of co-ed softball one
of the giants roaming the field are team Home Gas. With a slew of championships
to their name, every year they are favourites to crush their opponents.

So far this season that trepidation
has been well-founded. The 2010 Fall Adult Co-Ed Softball League, run by the Cayman
Islands Little League, is entering the playoff stages this week and Home Gas
leads the way. The side ended up atop a tense and highly competitive A division
at 9-3, a mere game ahead of the Island Taste Hot Stuff and the Coors Light
Chuggers (both were 8-4).

In fact Home Gas needed a pair of
victories in the final week of the regular season to secure their seventh
straight crown. The side beat KPMG A 15-5 and Coors Light 19-18 last week in
make-up matches. The result is that heading into their post-season match on
Thursday 11 November the side’s morale is high.

Team manager Dayne Brady (who works
as general manager for Home Gas) states the side is eyeing another
championship. “I feel we have a good chance to win the title,” Brady said. “We
have a lot of talent and we enjoy the sport. The teams are more competitive
this year than in years past. But we’ll put it together and make it work again.
Knowing how the guys are they’ll enjoy the ride but find a way to pull
through.”

Brady usually plays on the squad
but didn’t this year due to injuries. The local fisherman had little to worry
about as the side had no shortage of talent. From multi-sport star Ryan Ebanks
to veteran captain Peter Whittaker there is talent all over the field. Even the
ladies were fearsome with names like Courtney Stafford, Dionne Whittaker and
Joni Wood running the bases. Brady was quick to say that the women on the team
deserve the most props.

“The girls made a big impact this
year. Traditionally they were always the weaker spots on our side. But the
girls really contributed this year and we depended heavily on them. Even though
it was a whole team effort, the ladies pulled their own weight and now we wish
we had more females involved.”
