Moore rose to great heights in basketball in Cayman. Apparently the young man
is equally talented in American football.
Moore
had a touchdown catch for Santa Clarita Christian School recently in the
school’s 46-0 rout of Riverside Prep. With the victory Santa Clarita advanced
to the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern
Section Division One eight-a-side playoffs.
The
East End native plays tight-end for the California school, which is based in
Santa Clarita. Interestingly Moore is there on a basketball scholarship for the
next two years alongside fellow Cayman hoops stand-out Brandon Glasgow. The
scholarships are set to cover the roughly US$6,500 yearly tuition fee.
Moore,
18, is the son of Primrose and James Moore. Mum Primrose states she is as
surprised as any one else that her son is abroad playing football.
“He
never played it here (in Cayman),” Primrose said. “To be honest I don’t
understand the game. His basketball season doesn’t start until next month. The
football coach there saw him and when they looked at his height and build they
thought he’d be a good fit. They invited him to come out and he went from
there.”
Interestingly
Moore is the third young Caymanian to attend the school in the last two years.
In addition to Glasgow (who is 17) Bodden Town native Davi Cotterell, 18, was
accepted.
Like
most parents mum Primrose is worried about her son getting injured in full
tackle American football.
“I
am worried about him getting injured. I pray for him constantly and trust the
Lord to protect him. All I know is that football is a dangerous sport. Luckily
his season ends next month just before his basketball season gets going. I
trust he’ll be OK and it’s reassuring that the basketball coach spoke to him as
well.”
