The Christmas season may be a time when things slow down in Cayman but local sports continue to produce a barrage of news. The latest involves the discipline of dominos.
Surprisingly the Cayman Islands Dominos Association has a new President in Ray McLaughlin. A current player for the Island All-Stars Domino Club, McLaughlin takes over the presidency from Horace Duquesnay. The Corner Pocket bar owner had taken up the post earlier this year, replacing Royal Cayman Islands Police Service officer Derek Elliot Senior. Duquesnay had stated previously that he had a strong love for dominos though he gave some indication that he preferred a less hands-on role.
“I’ve always been into dominos for a long time, from my younger days,” Duquesnay said. “It has been a long haul for me and nowadays I admit I prefer to watch.”
McLaughlin is part of the ongoing local league and alongside fiancee Janet Hislop won an MVP trophy during a Canadian domino tournament this August. Dominos association Secretary Oletta Elliot (Derek’s wife) states McLaughlin is the right man for the position.
“We have a newly elected President in Ray who is an avid, seasoned domino player,” Elliot said. “He is a long-standing and respected member of Island All-Star Domino Club. Mr. Horace DuQuesnay resigned his post and representatives from the majority of the eight clubs on the island came together this month for a by-election and Mr. McLaughlin was selected as President in landslide victory.
“Ray brings with him a huge wealth of domino knowledge, having served as a former Public Relations Chairman, which gave him worldwide exposure to the international domino fraternity. With that knowledge I am quite sure he is the right person for the job. Ray will have help from the rest of the executive board in Vice President Vanessa Forrester, Assistant Secretary Sheena Taylor, Treasurer Dareen Ebanks, Assistant Treasurer Dwayne Jones, Public Relations officer Kristin Williams, Assistant Public Relations Tenannce ‘Shaft’ Bodden and Fundraiser Committee Chairperson Michelle Morgan in guiding the association in the right direction.”
