I was pleased to see the article in Tuesday’s paper titled ‘Police promote cycle safety’ encouraging cyclists to use lights on their bicycles when riding in the dark.
Howevver, perhaps Mr. Bult would explain why cyclists have to turn up between 6pm and 7.30pm – at twilight and dark, probably the most dangerous time for road users due to the bad lighting – on the fast, busy West Bay Road, practically in rush hour traffic. Perhaps late comers who arrive at 7pm when it is actually dark will miss the rush hour traffic to collect their lights?
If cyclists are turning up to collect a light, it indicates that they don’t already have a light for their bike. Then if all the 100 lights have already been given out they have to ride home in the dark, without a light, facing the possibility of a ticket (as the article also pointed out that tickets will be issued for non-use of lights on bicycles.)
Don’t get me wrong, I would like to support police initiatives to promote cycle safety particularly teaching cyclists which side is the left hand side of the road (which is apparently an issue here in Cayman), and safety on the roads in general. I just fail to see how turning up at night on the busy West Bay road to collect a light, is really helping this issue.
Perhaps daylight hours on a weekend would be a more suitable time!
