The Digicel Chuggers earned their sixth straight victory 9-5 over AndroGroup last week at the Field of Dreams.
The game was Digicel’s hardest test to date, as pitcher-coach Alan Markoff went down to an ankle injury in the bottom of the first inning and the team had to take an automatic out in the third position in the line-up for the rest of the game..
‘It was a big win for us,’ said Markoff. ‘The team really picked-up their game after I went down, especially defensively.’
The win made the Chuggers the only undefeated team in the B-League through the end of the first half of the season.
Donnie House and Neil Clements carried Digicel offensively. Markoff, in what could be his last at-bat of the season, doubled home a run and later scored in the Chuggers’ three-run first inning.
AndroGroup eventually tied the score at 5-5 in the fifth inning, but the Chuggers scored a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh to provide the margin of victory.
Chuggers third baseman Mark Wallace was called into a long relief role, and earned his second career pitching victory.
‘I knew I had to throw strikes because they would have taken walks if I didn’t,’ said Wallace. ‘But obviously, they didn’t know who they were messing with.’
The Chuggers are back in action against KPMG B on Tuesday night, before they face a particularly tough four-game stretch, most likely without their starting pitcher.
‘I have confidence in the team,’ said Markoff. ‘They’ll do what it takes with me out. We just have to remember what got us here in the first place: crystal clear communications.’
