It’s the perfect formula: More than 500 locals and tourists, more than $100,000 in prizes, and one of the world’s most beautiful beaches. To no one’s surprise, the magic worked again last Saturday as the 15th annual Flowers One-Mile Sea Swim drew an impressive 535 registered swimmers into the cool waters of Seven Mile Beach. It’s no easy feat to convince more than half-a-thousand people that they can-or want to-swim one mile in the ocean. No doubt that 100 grand in random prizes helps but it seems that most participants simply are thoroughly swept up in the excitement of so many people splashing in the same direction.
Dejevu. In a repeat of last year’s results, teen star Brett Fraser won overall and Cayman Islands Olympian Heather Roffey was the fastest woman.
Frank Flowers once again competed in the race he created. Once sedentary and overweight, he turned himself around years ago through exercise and is today one of Cayman’s fittest citizens. His daughter, Dara, worked hard to promote and organize the event but on Saturday she jumped in the water like everyone else and went the distance, too.
‘This is a fantastic race, you couldn’t ask for more,’ said an American swimmer who came here specifically for the event. ‘The water is great, everything is just perfect.’
Official results of the 2007 Flowers Sea Swim will appear this week in the Caymanian Compass.
