A school-wide campaign to promote interest in maths and science is under way, culminating in student exhibitions, mathematics fair and a special day of observance later this month.
All government schools will be involved, and private schools have also been invited to participate, said a GIS press release.

Events in the Mathematics Awareness Campaign kicked off this week with a fun and educational two-part Maths Competition, which began Tuesday for junior students and continues today for senior students. Being held at John Gray High School, the competition involves individual and group computation and problem solving tasks, the release said.
The Cayman Brac competition takes place the same days at the Teachers’ Centre.
Part two of the Maths Competition will be held 21-22 February in the form of an oral maths competition. The Fidelity Group of Companies is again sponsoring the competitions, the release said.
Dr. Desiree Charles, government’s Education Officer – Mathematics, is spearheading the project. She said that this special effort to increase interest and involvement of students, parents and teachers in mathematics activities is an annual part of the Education Department’s curriculum.
Teachers and students are also now working on mathematics and science projects which be featured in exhibitions
The first will be held Friday and Saturday, 10-11 February from 9am to 4pm at the Aston Rutty Centre in the Cayman Brac.
Grand Cayman’s Maths and Science Exhibition will take place 20-24 February.
These activities will culminate with the National Mathematics Day observance on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac on Friday, 24 February.
Plans are also under way for Grand Cayman’s Mathematics Fair the following day – Saturday, 25 February – at the Mary Miller Hall, adjacent to the Lighthouse School in Red Bay. Activities will include free maths T-shirts for all students, refreshments, maths quizzes, prizes, supermarket give-aways and airline tickets, the release said.
