Bike-A-Thon ready to roll

The Kiwanis Club of Grand Cayman is about to mark a milestone.

Next month, the service club will celebrate 25 years of staging its annual Bike-a-Thon fundraiser.

This year’s Bike-a-Thon is set for Saturday, 21 October, with proceeds going to support a variety of community projects.

More than 3,000 riders have taken part in the Bike-a-thon since its inception, raising more than $350,000 for charitable causes.

Ottmar Weber, honorary chairman of this year’s event, will be participating for the 24th time, having raised more than $50,000. A serious cyclist, Ottmar can ride the course from the Blow Holes to Smith Cove in less than one hour, but most riders complete the course in around two hours.

Participants raise funds by collecting pledges. A minimum pledge of $25 is required. RE/MAX Cayman Islands has signed up as the first major sponsor, with a $1,000 donation underwriting the event.

This year’s event offers three different courses for different levels of experience: five miles from Smith Cove and back for riders under eight years old; 20 miles from the Blow Holes to Smith Cove; and 50 miles from Smith Cove and back for the ‘racing riders’. Plans are for most riders to return to Smith Cove at about the same time for a festive wrap up of the event.

Funds from the event will be donated to the NCVO’s foster home where 10 youngsters are being cared for on a full time basis.
