Mr. Connor has earned licence to retire

Anyone who has licensed his or her car at the Department of Vehicle Licensing in George Town has likely been asked by Elbert Connor to beep their horn or flash their high beams.

As one of only two vehicle inspectors at the George Town office, Mr. Connor will soon trade his inspector shirt for more casual attire when he retires this month after 20 years of service with government, states a GIS press release.

Then-Leader of Government Business Mr. McKeeva Bush, congratulated Mr. Connor saying: ‘You have set a good example for Young Caymanian civil servants by your conscientious and dedicated service to the government. On behalf of the people of the Cayman Islands I thank you for your long service to our country and wish you the best in your retirement.’

Reflecting on the changes over his years of service, Mr. Connor said: ‘When I first started with the department we inspected 7,000 cars each year and now we see over 30,000 cars a year – just in George Town.’

Mr. Connor was employed from 1989 to 2005 as a vehicle inspector with the licensing department but actually began his career with government a few years earlier from 1981-1983 when he worked as one of the first marine enforcement officers with the Royal Cayman Islands Police. In addition to his long term of service with the government, Mr. Connor had a career at sea as an engine mechanic and as a heavy equipment operator.

‘I look forward to taking a break from the traffic and car fumes to spend time repairing my house and helping my daughter and son-in-law,’ Mr. Connor said.

Licensing Department Supervisor Roy Bush said: ‘The Cayman Islands are one of the few countries in the Caribbean that require such a strict inspection before licensing vehicles and heavy equipment. Mr. Connor has contributed greatly to Cayman’s excellent safety record.’
