Man who absconded will be charged

The man who left Cayman after being found guilty of rape last year began his eight-year sentence Monday.

Herbert Walker appeared in Grand Court, where Mr. Justice Alex Henderson signed the warrant committing him to prison.

He did so after Crown Counsel Andre Mon Desir explained that Walker had been returned to the Island from Jamaica on Friday, following extradition proceedings.

After court adjourned, Mr. Mon Desir confirmed to the Caymanian Compass that a charge is going to be laid against Walker for having fled while on bail from the Grand Court.

Walker was found guilty by a jury on 15 April 2004. Mr. Justice Seymour Panton allowed his bail to continue while a pre-sentence report was prepared. Walker’s wife had signed a surety for him in the sum of $10,000; after the verdict, the judge increased this sum to $15,000.

When it appeared that Walker had left the jurisdiction using his twin brother’s passport, the wife had to pay. After hearing pleas on her behalf, the judge eventually accepted $12,000 and remitted the other $3,000 (Compass, 11 May 2004).

Crown Counsel Gail Johnson, who had conducted the prosecution of the case, began the extradition process. As reported in Monday’s Compass, Walker heard of an operation by the Jamaican Constabulary and gave himself up.
