Teams fuel the action

As the second of three check points for Jet Around Cayman, the East End dock near the Texaco station was a favoured fuelling stop for many race participants on Monday.

Support teams were in place well ahead of time, and appeared to be well-coordinated when their riders arrived.

Some bystanders cheered their favourites, while others enjoyed the race as the test of man and machine that it is.

One rider attracted more that the usual amount of noise, but not because his cheering section was bigger. He apparently failed to report his name and number to race officials at the end of the dock, choosing instead to ride in, steer around the race buoy and head right back out again.

Mechanical failure disappointed one competitor and his following. But at least it happened close enough to the checkpoint that safe return to shore was not a problem.

Race officials for this checkpoint were Roger Borden, the flagman who signalled riders; Dwayne Rankine, who handled communications; and April General, who recorded times.

After the last rider reported in, officials moved to the Royal Palms finish line. Many spectators, meanwhile, had already left for the third and final checkpoint at South Sound, having travelled first to North Side for the check-in at the dock near Over the Edge, formerly Apollo.
