Minister tours Sister Islands

Sustainable development emerged as a top concern among residents in the Sister Islands during an official visit by Tourism Minister Charles Clifford last week.

Discussions from an earlier Sister Islands Tourism Association meeting in Cayman Brac along with a visit to Little Cayman helped to highlight some of the residents’ and property managers’ concerns, said a GIS press release.

‘Understandably, we want to make the Sister Islands as marketable as possible to the largest number of people without comprising our heritage or the tranquillity of life in these islands,’ Minister Clifford responded.

‘Trying to find the balance between what is good for the economy and proper for our country is at the forefront of our thoughts when we discuss future tourism initiatives throughout Cayman.

‘It is our promise that we will continue to pursue the proper path for developing tourism in the Sister Islands and we will do so with the help of the people in the community – we will not tell you how things will go, instead we will work with you to ensure that our approach to sustainable tourism is beneficial to everyone here.’

Accompanied by several ministry officials, Mr. Clifford stopped at several locations in Little Cayman, including such nature tourism sites as the iguana reserve.

Future visits to the Brac and Little Cayman will be scheduled quarterly to further maintain the commitment of government in empowering Sister Islands’ development, the release said.
