Cayman police on high alert

The Cayman Islands Government and the Royal Cayman Islands Police said they would put all the resources necessary into finding those responsible for the armed robbery of a family living at Patrick’s Islands last Thursday afternoon.

There is evidence, however, that a member of the Cabinet was actually targeted by the criminals, Governor Bruce Dinwiddy said at a press conference Friday.

‘The perpetrators of this crime will be brought to justice,’ said Acting Police Commissioner Rudolph Dixon.

Two men armed with guns forced their way into the private home occupied by two women and two young children about 4pm Thursday.

The women were tied up and had pillowcases placed over their heads.

When the husband of one of the occupants returned home from work, he too was tied up and had a pillowcase put over his head.

The robbers took jewellery and escaped in the family’s car. The vehicle was subsequently found abandoned only a short distance away in Prospect.

Rather than just being a planned robbery, Deputy Police Commissioner Anthony Ennis said the gunmen appeared to have entered the house with another intent in mind.

‘There is some evidence suggesting the target was a high-ranking public official that lives in the area,’ he said.

Mr. Ennis said the police would not leave any stone unturned in their efforts to find the perpetrators of the crime.

‘This is a national security issue,’ he said. ‘I urge anyone who knows any information about this crime to come forward.’

The police said a special incident room had been established at George Town Police Station, with the investigation headed by Detective Superintendent Ken Hall.

A forensic examination was conducted on the house and stolen vehicle.

Governor Dinwiddy said the criminals would not be successful in intimating the country in its ‘unswerving effort to maintain law and order in the Cayman Islands.’

‘We will not give in to the small amount of people in the community who are causing this,’ he said.

Chief Secretary George McCarthy said the Government was treating the incident as extremely serious and sent a message to the perpetrators.

‘You will not be successful in disrupting the peaceful way of life for which the Cayman Islands is known,’ he said.

Mr. McCarthy urged the community to help the police.

‘We are a small community of 45,000 people,’ he said. ‘God has blessed us with a good way of life.

‘Because this way of life is a gift to us, it is incumbent that we guard it to so that we can pass it down to future generations.’

Mr. McCarthy said security was being provided to all the members of the Cabinet.

Police are now searching for two men in connection with an armed robbery at a Patrick’s Island home last Thursday afternoon.

One is described as aged between 20 and 25, of slim build, 5’5′ to 5’7′, with a narrow face, pointed chin and no facial hair.

His hair, which had twisted knots around the head, partially fell over his forehead and reached half way to the shoulders.

He walked in a slow manner and was wearing baggy faded jeans pants that reached just below his knees and a long-sleeved royal blue sweat shirt. The collar of the shirt was up to his neck.

He spoke reasonable standard English with a heavy Jamaican accent and at one stage spoke raw Jamaican patois.

The second man was of heavy build with a medium sized stomach. He was between 5’7′ and 5’9′ and did not appear physically fit. His face was covered by a dark coloured hood with eye holes.

He wore dark coloured clothing, possibly made of nylon material.

He spoke reasonable standard English with a heavy Jamaican accent and occasionally spoke raw Jamaican patois.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, who might recognise the descriptions, or who has any information about the crime is asked to call the George Town police incident room on 244-3056.

Calls can also be made anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 800-8477.
