Boatswain’s Beach comes to life

There is a growing sense of achievement and excitement brewing in North West Point, West Bay as Boatswain’s Beach opens the first phase of its new site, reads a press release.

‘Having it operational, while we continue to develop, only one year after Ivan means we are setting goals and attaining them despite the aftermath,’ said Mr. Ken Hydes, Managing Director of Boatswain’s Beach.

The project itself is no small accomplishment and is sure to become a premier attraction not only in the Cayman Islands but in the Caribbean, the release states.

‘The vision behind this project is evident in the landscape and architecture and brilliantly lends itself to the ultimate goal of the new attraction: a true Caymanian experience.

‘The buildings are in keeping with the Caymanian theme and heritage, and allow a fun, safe, and interactive way to lounge or indulge in the natural history and exoticness of the Cayman Islands.’

Guests are first welcomed into the park by the brightly coloured flora and rich verdant foliage surrounding a brick pattern featuring the ‘coat of arms’ and can then make their way through one of the six deck doors.

‘Walking into the Reception Building looks and feels as if one has entered a cat-boat, with semi-circular beams of wood running across a high arched ceiling. The inside is adorned with contemporary furnishings with views to both the park and the ocean; creating an ambience that celebrates our rich maritime history and our movement forward,’ states the release.

The new 3,500-square-foot retail shop features ‘floating shelves’, liquid panelled floors, synthetic rock and special lighting that gives the place a sense of constant ebb and flow. Having something for everyone, it includes a chromatic display of T-shirts, jewellery, memorabilia, books and videos, towels and sun-block, to hand-made items, wooden flutes, tambourines, thatch items, a kid section and a friendly staff.

The Turtle Crawl Deli serves up wraps, sandwiches, salads and soups and features delicious cuisine like the Mango Chicken Salad or Smoked Wahoo Wrap. For those wanting a bit of authentic zest there is Marinated Conch and a variety of Heavy Cakes.

Boatswain’s Beach is also the new home of the Cayman Turtle Farm, housing not only a new breeding pond and display tanks but all that is integral to the Cayman Turtle Farm, making it unique not only in the Caribbean but in the world.

The merger deems Boatswain’s Beach a research park, an advocate for preservation and culture, the only provider of one of the country’s main food staples as well as a theme park.

‘The essence of the sea and marine life is inherent at Boatswain’s Beach and very much alive in all you will see, do and touch. The coming to life of this establishment promises an experience not to be missed,’ said the release.

Phase two will open in 2006, boasting a 1.3 million gallon salt water lagoon, a predator tank, two more restaurants including a fine dining, a free-flight bird aviary, and a historic Caymanian street with authentic porch side artisans.

Boatswain’s Beach will host the Chamber of Commerce’s popular Business After Hours on Thursday starting at 5.30pm.

The evening will celebrate the opening of the new Reception Building, the Turtle Crawl Deli and retail shop.

Refreshments and hors-d’oeuvres will be served.
