An off-duty policeman was arrested on Sunday after allegedly being seen taking part in illegal ‘numbers games’ at a bar, the RCIP said yesterday.
At 11am on Sunday, a police officer saw the policeman at a local bar and restaurant in the central George Town area.
From observations it appeared the off-duty policeman was taking part in an illegal lottery, otherwise known as the ‘numbers games,’ said a RCIP press release.
Other police were sent to the scene to complete the investigation and the policeman under suspicion was searched, as was his vehicle, and nothing illegal or relating to the illegal lottery was found.
A lottery ticket dated 18 September 2005 was on the ground close by although there were also other people in the immediate area.
A further search under warrant was carried out at the officer’s private residence and he was interviewed under caution.
‘Scientific examination of the article in question was unable to establish a conclusive connection to the officer in question,’ said the RCIP.
Police said they were satisfied all the officer’s rights were afforded to him, including the right to an attorney, which he refused. They also said he was co-operative with the investigations.
‘Now that the criminal investigation has been completed the matter will be referred to the Complaints and Discipline Department to ensure that the officer was not in breach of any internal procedures, including the RCIP code of conduct, good order and discipline,’ said the RCIP.
‘The officer who made the observations is part of the current exercise following the aggravated burglary in Patrick’s Island and was at this location as a customer,’ the RCIP release pointed out.
