Photography contest on

The Caribbean Tourism Organisation and the National Geographic Traveler magazine have announced the first annual Caribbean Youth Photography contest and the Cayman Islands is one of the participating countries.

The ‘In My View’ competition invites Caribbean students aged 12-17 years-old to submit photos that they believe capture the best attributes of their country.

According to a press release, the images should represent a variety of elements in Caribbean culture – the people, food, landscapes or local events that best describe the spirit of the community.

Submissions will be accepted from now until Tuesday, 15 November, 2005, and each student may enter up to five images. Entry forms are available from local schools.

The grand-prize winner will receive a four-day, three-night trip for two (child and parent or guardian) to Washington, D.C. The trip will include a visit to National Geographic Society headquarters and a tour of the city with a National Geographic photographer, plus a 35 mm digital camera.

In addition, the winning student’s photographs will be published in National Geographic Traveller’s May/June 2006 issue.

The second-place winner will receive the ultimate photography package of a digital camera and camera carrying case, as well as three National Geographic Society photography books.

The third-place winner will receive 10 National Geographic Society photography books.

A photo exhibit of some of the finalists’ work will be on display at select travel shows.

‘Photography is one of the cornerstones of our magazine,’ said Kimberly Connaghan, National Geographic Traveller’s advertising director.

‘We believe the winner of this contest will provide an insider perspective that can only be captured by locals living in the region.’

‘We are very excited about this new opportunity for the children of the Caribbean to participate in this competition and possibly have their creativity recognized internationally. A chance to learn from a National Geographic professional photographer is itself a life-changing experience for a young enthusiast,’ said Hugh Riley, Caribbean Tourism Organisation Director of Marketing for the Americas.

Participating countries include Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bonaire, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Nevis, Puerto Rico, St. Eustatius, St. Barts, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, St. Martin, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos and U.S. Virgin Islands.
