Retiring after 17 years as an emergency medical technician at Cayman Islands Hospital, Irving Williams was honoured in a special ceremony Wednesday, 12 October.
Among the guests on hand to show their appreciation for his service were Shirlene Henriques, acting CEO of the Health Services Authority; Dr. Fiona Robertson, head of the Accident and Emergency Department; Ella Conolly, nurse manager of the A&E; and many of his EMT colleagues.
‘You’ve had a long time with us,’ Mrs. Henriques said. ‘I feel quite honoured to have been part of the service with you. As part of the team, your willingness, your courtesy have been exemplary.’
Dr. Robertson praised him as well.
‘I can’t say there’s a more dedicated person that I’ve worked with that I’ve had to say goodbye to. I know his dedication will not finish with his retirement,’ she said.
Mr. Williams recounted his time at the hospital.
‘When I started back here in 1988, there were three eight-hour shifts and one ambulance service for the whole island. We were called ambulance service officers.
‘As time went on, we advanced; the staff went away to school and returned to train us so we could better serve the community. We are no longer ASOs; we are highly trained EMTs and paramedics. I am so, so proud to have worked in the service and seen it grow,’ Mr. Williams said.
