Deadly shooting in George Town

Crewe road shooting scene Cayman
Shots were fired in George Town Monday night, leaving one person dead and another injured.

It was not clear precisely when the shooting happened, but Royal Cayman Islands Police officers came across the first victim, a 22 year old male, around 9.35pm on Cranbrook Drive off Crewe Road.

The second victim, an 18 year old male, was found dead of gunshot wounds a short time later in the same area.

The 22 year old who survived the attack may need to be airlifted for further treatment. He was in surgery in the Cayman Islands hospital Monday night.

Monday night’s shooting is the fourth deadly gun attack in a week on Grand Cayman, which had seen no killings in 2011 prior to last Tuesday.

The other three shooting deaths occurred in West Bay on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday nights. All were believed to be the result of gang activity.

  1. Where did you say this happened? This cannot be Cayman, you must be talking about somewhere else. Tourism will plummet when people see these things happening…. This country would never stand by and let what is happening to continue. I know the legislature, the court systems, the Immigration Department, the people, would take action and do whatever has to be done…….if 10 years ago, for argument sakes, there wasn’t what is happening now….take a look and ask what has changed, what are we not doing? People only do what they know they can do and are not afraid of consequences…..

  2. Crime is getting costly to Cayman in more ways the one can imagine, it must be comforting to these knuckleheads to know that they can shot at each other and then get the same type of medical care that Law Abiding citizens get

Oh by the way go to Trip Advisor and type in Crime Cayman Islands and you will see how Caymans rep is now in the gutterThere’s even warnings about traveling to Grand Cayman on US Government Travel Sites warning potential visitors to Cayman to be weary. This can’t be good for the economy or Cayman Tourism, over the years the one thing that Cayman had over other island was the fact that it was safe, this is something you can no longer brag about when people are afraid to walk the street or go to the beach after dark or even during the day.

One good thing may come of this is surely there will be a boost in profits for security services and maybe even the body guard business I wonder how long it will be before people are forced to pay the gangs for protection.

  3. In a way, there is a ray of light in that when firearm crime escalates, the perpatrators leave behind physical evidence and there are more witnesses for the Police to investigate. Hopefully, they will find them and take the illigal guns off the road. Moreover, it would be interesting to see robberies go down amidst this gang war, because it could mean that the robbers are the same gang members. And that helps police narrow their search for the robbers too.

  4. I had predicted a two for one special when it came to the shootings but my prayers we not answered the way I requested…I had wanted the Police to take out two bad guys at one time. Oh well…you can’t get everything you want and I guess these two victims were not choir boys.
I wonder if all the armed cops at night (maybe 4 or so) were in West Bay so that it only made sense for the criminals to strike on another part of Cayman.
I don’t have any wonderful solutions but I do believe that Caymanians should support some strong arm tactics, at least for the short term. For those that disagree, you can go to church and pray that the criminals only kill each other and spare the innocent. It might help. My prayers for a two for one special worked!

  5. I think it’s time people get serious. It is absolutely rediculous that the local authorities don’t have a solid grasp on the problems facing this small island. Check the below article posted less than 3 weeks ago – even other countries know more than the local authorities.

Meanwhile there are these new rules for finger printing expats. Is that the solution? It’s very unfortunate, but the people who are hurting this country are friends and relatives of long-time residents.

I agree with many comments that we should all say a prayer for this country, but we must also accept the help God has allowed to be offerred. My paster once told a story about a man who was trapped in a flood and prayed to God for help. He was offered help from a neighbor, a boat, and helicopter. Each time he refused the help saying God would help him. He drowned. He couldn’t see that God sent all the help. If Cayman is offered help from the Crown, or heaven forbid the USA, will it be able to swallow its pride and accept the help? The local government can’t fix this problem for countless reasons, we need to be willing to get help.
