Thieves used a sledgehammer to try to break into an ATM in the Butterfield Bank in George Town Monday night.
Police said they were contacted by the management of Butterfield Bank in Fort Street Tuesday morning to report that the bank’s ATM had been tampered with overnight.
A review of the bank’s CCTV footage showed the thieves using a sledgehammer to try to prise the ATM from the wall, but they were unsuccessful.
Police said the ATM was not breached and no cash was stolen.
George Town CID are investigating the incident.
This is the second unsuccessful attempt this month to smash into or remove a Butterfield Bank ATM in the lobby of the Cayman Islands Hospital. In that attempt, two men stole a truck from the Red Gate Garage in Red Gate Road in George Town and drove it to the hospital entrance. They tried to remove the ATM, but only tipped it over and then could not get it out of the lobby.
