Junior girls volleyball is looking to make inroads and there is already support for a junior national team programme.
The Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation is the recipient of a sponsorship grant from Walkers. The grant will help underwrite the junior girls volleyball initiative and the corresponding national team.
Speaking on behalf of Walkers, partner Andrew Miller states Walkers have shown an unwavering commitment to community over the years. “Walkers is delighted to work with youth programmes,” Miller said. “The junior girls volleyball programme will reach a large group across the islands.”
The federation’s endeavour, designed to reach girls ages 10 through 18, will procure coaching assistance, tournament materials support and travel.
Kennedy McGowan, Vice President of the federation, received the Walkers sponsorship cheque in the presence of Taylor Burrowes, Fundraising Committee Coordinator of the federation and Sarah Broad, Marketing/Communications Manager of Walkers Global. McGowan states the plan is to grow volleyball through the youth.
“We have a strong Caribbean volleyball presence, with respectable rankings, considering Cayman is a small island community,” McGowan said. “We intend to do our sponsors proud and our country proud. We thank Walkers for confidence reposed in this meaningful programme.”
This coming Saturday, October 1, sees the official commencement of the programme and will serve as a try-out date. All girls 10-18 years are invited to attend the University College of the Cayman Islands gym from 9am through 12noon.
News of the junior programme comes after Cayman hosted, for the first time, an Olympic qualifying event earlier this year. Cayman has been selected to host a second Olympic qualifier during the first week of December.
The federation is on a recruitment drive to grow the junior national programme in order to groom the next generation of national women’s volleyball talent which will shape an elite squad. The federation is targeting a drive towards the 2016 Olympics.
Andrea Williams is head coach for the programme and can be contacted via e-mail at [email protected]
