Brad powers Esso

Brad Galbraith is known for his exploits in local hockey. But the Ottawa native has a passion for hoops and recently showed he has potential in the sport.

Galbraith, 18, was the top scorer last Saturday on the opening night of the 2011 Appleby Under-19 Basketball League. He scored 14 points (including a three-pointer) in leading the Esso Blazers to a 42-36 victory over Wesleyan Christian Academy. The starting point guard also had four rebounds and two steals.

Helping out Galbraith at the Cayman Islands Basketball Association court off Eastern Avenue would be Oscar Rivers (seven points, 13 rebounds). Wesleyan were led by basketball prodigies Travis Stroup (13 points, three steals) and Tim Corbett (eight points, 12 rebounds).

Over in the girls division, the match of the day featured an upset as the Comets beat the Sparks 47-45. La-Torae Nixon was brilliant as usual for the Sparks with 35 points, 24 rebounds and eight steals. Comets were guided by Chloe Powery (19 points, 15 rebounds), Shana Linwood-McLaughlin, Ashley Ebanks and of course Felecia Connor (eight points each).

The other match saw Monarchs down the Lynx 45-27 thanks to Rochel Gardener’s 20 points. Lynx meanwhile featured Hannah Parchment (19 points, 10 steals).
