What will it take for the people of this country to really wake up and change the direction we are heading?
Murders, rapes, missing women, robberies, corruption, police with no answers, leadership with tied hands, many out of work, children with many problems, old people being left behind and many, many other problems facing us day to day on this Islands that is supposed to be one of the best places on planet Earth.
When you really take a check, not too long ago we were the envy of many countries worldwide, but look at us now. We are like an old boat out to sea with many leaks and nothing to stop the water from coming in. For a long time now I have been blaming the leadership of this country for putting us in this mess. But in this letter I will make a change. Not only am I blaming the leadership, but I must blame the people of these Islands, for you are the ones that are guilty of helping to run the good ship Cayman on the reef and wrecking her with your greed and bad judgement; with your hunger for things of this world, with your lack of love and respect for the real Cayman way of life. You are the ones to blame for the bad leadership you choose and also for all the crime and the wasteful way you now live and more.
We are so quick to point a finger at those among us from the outside world and yes, many of them are just here for the easy money and a better way of life. But we are to blame for whatever they are doing here. We opened our doors to all of them. But my people, enough is enough.
I tell you this, if we don’t change direction from the way we have been going, soon and very soon we will not have a Cayman like our fathers and grandfathers enjoyed. Look around you. Listen to what’s being talked about each day on the talk shows and read what is being printed in the papers.
Not only is money tight, but many of the people on this Island do not know where to go for answers. The leaders cannot help them, for they are too busy trying to take care of themselves and their rich friends. So what must we all do to turn this Island around?
We must first of all admit that there is a real need for national unity and that we have a real big problem and in order for us to really fix the problems we now face we must choose a different leadership and change a lot of the things in our system that is helping to drag us down.
I know that many of you are afraid to lose your little hand outs that are given to you now and then, but in order for this country to get back to where it should be, we need more national pride and each Caymanian must stop expecting the leadership to have this national pride. For them, we the people of the great Cayman Islands, united we stand. Remember? We are the ones that took Cayman out of poverty and placed her as one of the world’s very best places to live, to work, to make money in peace, and love for all. Well what went wrong? Even people that used to vacation here do not want to come back anymore. Why? You all know why. As I write this letter I know that there in the homes of many of my people you are hurting and that you want to see our islands and all the people on them once again happy and doing well. We cannot say that about the way we are now. So I am asking all my people to come together like you come together to celebrate Pirates Week. Come together and let your voice be heard for the betterment of our way of life, for our future and for a better leadership and direction.
China, USA, England, Canada or any other place on Earth is not the answer. We the people of the Cayman Islands are the answer for this new direction for all of us before it is too late.
