June is here and that means it’s time to Jet Around Cayman.
The annual personal watercraft race is slated to take place Monday, 13 June, on the Queen’s Birthday holiday. The Seven Mile Public Beach on West Bay Road will once again host the race, which is scheduled to start at 1pm. Activities will be ongoing on the beach from 10am to 5pm featuring the likes of a kid zone, tent city and wowballs expo.
There will also be beach flag football and volleyball tournaments organised by the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association and Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation, respectively.
For the race, action will be split into five classes: Pro-Open, Expert-Open, Amateur, Veteran and Rookie. Riders will jet around Grand Cayman going to West Bay, North Side and East End before finishing back at Public Beach. The race is slated to last at least two hours with three pit stops: Over The Edge Bar (North Side), East End dock and South Sound dock.
Title defence
Much of the focus on race day will be whether the Guadeloupe troupe returns to defend their title. Christopher Lycoan won the Pro Class segment on a Honda Jet Ski and walked away with a cool US$6,000. The first Cayman rider home was George ‘Lu-Lu’ Smith of Tony’s Toys race team and claimed US$1,500.
Lycoan says he was pleased to have competed in Cayman.
“It felt great to win and everything went well,” Lycoan says. “Cayman is a great place and the people are so friendly. I thank everyone who played a part in making this happen. We all had a good time here and we intend to come back next year to win again.”
A number of activities will be taking place prior to race day. On Saturday, 4 June, a road show and bikini shoot will take place around the island, finishing up at Coconut Joe’s, with proceeds going to charity. The official kick-off party is Friday, 10 June, with a concert at Margaritaville. Doors open at 8pm.
Among the major sponsors this year are LIME, Monster Media, Caymanian Compass, WestStar TV Ltd, Heineken, Paramount Carpets, West-Tec performance and the Cayman Islands Watercraft Association.
