Division two of local basketball will have a new champion this year.
Last season’s winners the Personnel 2000 Warriors were defeated by the Shockwaves 62-58 on Tuesday night. The game three victory at the University College hall gives the Shockwaves a best-of-three series win.
Leading the Shockwaves was player/coach Jonathan Powery. The West Bay basketball guru also has a Under-16 team vying for a title. Powery states beating the Warriors came down to heart.
“First of all I want to give God the praise and glory for this,” Powery said. “To get where we are we have to thank Him. This is the first time I’ve been to the finals. This is my second year coaching in division two and I played off and on the last three or four years since I was 18. The job is not over yet though as we have a little more to go.
“We came back from 19 down to win game two and we came back from 11 points this time. It felt great and Diego Smith and Cleve Stewart were the key guys. Diego and Cleve clicked from the U19 league and they really did the job and pulled it together.”
Up next for the Shockwaves is team Charterland in the division two finals. Game one took place on Thursday with game two slated for this Sunday at 5pm in the Arts and Recreation Centre.
