Update: Visitor critical after airport smash

Update: A female visitor who police said was struck by a taxi van Monday morning at Owen Roberts International Airport was seriously injured in the auto-pedestrian crash.

An accident involving a pedestrian and a taxi led police to block a road leading into Grand Cayman’s Owen Roberts International Airport Monday morning.

The road reopened around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Initial story: According to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, the female pedestrian was struck by a taxi and was taken to the Cayman Islands Hospital with serious injuries.

Police on the scene have blocked Owen Roberts Drive leading into the airport.

“Airport bound traffic is being re-routed to a road behind the long-term parking and Andy’s Rental Car to access the airport,” a police statement read.

The crash is still under investigation, police said.
