The annual Poppy Appeal fundraiser for local veterans started this week with a small ceremony Friday at The Wharf.
The event launched this year’s poppy fundraising campaign, and included Premier Wayne Panton, Governor Martyn Roper, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, Minister Andre Ebanks and veterans.
“No matter what the circumstances are, it is a special distinction to share with members of the Cayman Islands Veterans Association. We recognise their contribution to our country and to the world,” Premier Wayne Panton said.
Due to the public health situation around COVID-19, the Veterans Association said they will not be able to carry out their annual gala. A large part of their membership is of retirement age, and considered at high-risk.
“I know that the Cayman Veterans Association does a fantastic job looking at veterans and their families. The Poppy Appeal is one of their biggest avenues of raising funds, so please really encourage everyone to find the poppies and purchase them,” Governor Roper said.
The annual poppy campaign runs until Remembrance Monday on 15 Nov.
