Opposition asks for more information on gov’t reopening plan

Opposition leader Roy McTaggart has called on the government to release more details of its border-reopening plan.

The government on Friday announced that quarantine requirements would cease for most incoming vaccinated travellers from 20 Nov., effectively reopening the local borders to tourists.

McTaggart said that while “the broad outline of the reopening plan and learning of the proposed new date is undoubtedly welcome”, the Opposition and the public recognised it as “very much a work in progress”.

He said Friday’s announcement gave everyone a “glimpse” of the government’s strategy and preparedness for reopening, “albeit at a very high level”.

At the briefing at which the reopening plan was announced, Deputy Governor Franz Manderson gave an overview of what it would entail, saying it would include 10 key categories, including policies to ensure continuity of essential services, healthcare systems and educational institutions, among others.

Premier Wayne Panton said at that briefing that more details of the specifics of the plan would be released in the coming days.

“As the Deputy Governor said at the press briefing, the public has a right to see every component of the plan,” McTaggart said in his statement. “I couldn’t agree more. I also agree with the Deputy Governor that the public expects the Government to prove that we are ready to re-open.”

He added that the day before the briefing where the reopening plan was announced, he had received an email from the premier inviting the Opposition to attend a presentation this week on the reopening plan.

“I expect that this will allow the Opposition the opportunity to better understand the details of the plan outlined last Friday,” McTaggart said.
