The Cayman Islands Football Association has indefinitely postponed the start of the 2021-2022 football season as a precaution after several players tested positive for COVID-19.
“No games until the ExCo [CIFA Executive Committee] makes a decision, too many players are positive, and it poses a risk to everyone else,” CIFA stated in an emailed response to queries from the Cayman Compass.
The football season, which was scheduled to begin on 2 Oct., has been postponed twice before. Initially the season was put on hold due to the challenges during the registration process and issues with floodlights at The Annex Field. It was further compounded by the updated COVID-19 restrictions.
The ExCo eventually decided to kick off their season on Sunday, 7 Nov, at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex where both the Men and Women CIFA Charity Shield matches would be have been played.
However, the association announced Thursday, 4 Nov, that those plans have since been scratched.
“Please be advised that the CIFA Executive Committee has decided at last night’s (Wednesday, 3 Nov) meeting that due to the current situation of the COVID-19 Pandemic that is affecting our clubs, the start of the season has been delayed to a date to be determined.”
Local clubs were also notified of the decision.
