Cayman marks fifth COVID-related death, as 336 new positive cases confirmed

The exit PCR test as a condition of release from isolation is unlawful, lawyers claim.

Cayman has registered its fifth COVID-related death, according to Chief Medical Officer Dr. John Lee’s report on Monday.

The unvaccinated 71-year-old was described as “COVID-19 positive” with “multiple comorbidities”, according to the update from the health ministry. The death certificate lists COVID-19 as a contributory factor.

It added, the person was found unresponsive at home by a family member.

The Public Health Department reported 336 positive results, including one in a traveller and 335 coming from the community, up to 8am on Monday. 2,069 PCR tests have been conducted since Friday.

There were 22 COVID-19 patients hospitalised, the update said. No details were provided about those people’s conditions, nor their vaccination status.

These results brought the number of active cases of COVID-19 to 4,080 and the total number of cases recorded since the start of the pandemic stood at 7,074 as of the 8am reporting time on Monday.

4,664 people are in isolation either in government isolation facilities or at home.

1,854 total positive lateral flow tests have been recorded since the introduction of the lateral flow test programme; these numbers are included in the total positive numbers given above.

18 active cases in the Sister Islands were confirmed by Faith Hospital at 8am on Monday, with three identified since Friday.

To date, there had been 119 total cases recorded in the Sister Islands, with 101 having recovered. Out of the total number of cases, 61 were fully vaccinated, six were partially vaccinated, and 52 were unvaccinated.

Over 99% of over-50s vaccinated

Up to the same point, 58,057 people (82% of 71,106) have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Meanwhile 56,018 individuals (79%) had completed the two-dose course.

Additionally, 10,615 people (representing 15% of the total population) have received a third or booster dose, up to that point.

There have been 124,246 COVID-19 vaccinations given in total.

Of the total number vaccinated, 49% are female and the age group breakdown for first doses is as follows:

82%       12 to 18 years of age (leaving 650 unvaccinated)

92%       30 to <40 (leaving 1,121 unvaccinated)
