A Cayman Islands Fire Service crew is expected to remain at the George Town landfill overnight Monday to monitor the site after smoke was spotted earlier in the afternoon.

CIFS equipment is on standby at the landfill in the event of a flare-up, a brief Government Information Services statement said Monday night.

Fire officers, the statement said, reported smoke coming from multiple spots in an area 100 yards in diameter, earlier in the afternoon.

However no flames were seen when they arrived shortly after 4pm on the scene following a dispatch from 911 Public Safety Communications.

The statement said the crew is working alongside Department of Environmental Health to monitor the landfill as a precautionary measure.

Just over a week ago both the CIFS and DEH were monitoring the landfill after hotspots were detected.

Though no naked flames broke out at the site, there were damping operations as steam was spotting at the landfill.

Fire Services spent three consecutive days at the George Town landfill monitoring and damping down the hot spots that were spotted after steam was seen Friday 19 Nov.

The site was eventually handed over to DEH to continue monitoring.
